Happy Birthday Bipasha Basu, The Modern Scream Queen

Happy Birthday Bipasha Basu, The Modern Scream Queen

Bipasha Basu debuted with Ajnabee, a thriller that has become a cult classic. When she debuted, trade pundits took a liking to the dusky Bong beauty. Many thought that she had a future. Basu survived in a cutthroat industry for two decades.

With her other hit Movie, Raaz, Bipasha Basu and the Bhatt Camp gave legitimacy to the Indian horror genre. That genre was lying by the roadside. Several B, C, and  Z grade movies cropped up after the Ramsays lost interest in Bollywood horror movies and cheapened it

Raaz was a watershed movie for Bollywood horror. The movie reignited a producer’s interest in the horror genre. Audiences no longer needed to shy away from the fact that they had bought tickets for a horror flick. Not to forget, both Raaz and Jism are legit franchises today.

Bipasha Basu starrers like Raaz and Jism bought the adult audiences to the theaters. Before that, Bollywood horror movies found it difficult to manage a mainstream release in cities.

For some reason, sensuousness couples with horror. Very few, rare movies don’t have some kind of erotic aspect to it – like The Grudge, that’s currently tanking at the box office. Basu had no qualms of embracing the sensuous aesthetic of a horror movie for the masses.

Critics term Bipasha Basu as the modern age scream queen, and Bipasha’s worked hard to get that title. After Raaz (2002), she starred in thrillers and horror movies like Jism (for which she won a Filmfare Award for Best Villain) (2003), Madhoshi, Rudraksh, Rakht and Chehra. In the early 2000s, audiences thought that Bipasha being in the cast was a confirmation that this was a horror movie.

At the turn of the decade, she was part of some mainstream movies like No Entry, Apaharan, Humko Deewana Kar Gayein and not to forget, Omkara and Dhoom 2.

She returned to the horror genre in 2012 with movies like Raaz 3D and Aatma. In Aatma, she paired with Nawazuddin Siddiqui. She’s has continued her sojourn into the horror genre with movies liken Creatures 3D and Alone. Her upcoming movie, with husband Karan Singh Grover is Aadat, an action thriller.

Bipasha has also agreed to a cameo in Raaz 5, the upcoming sequel in the franchise. That movie also brings back Emraan Haashmi and features Shruti Haasan, Vaani Kapoor and Sooraj Pancholi.

Here’s wishing a very Happy Birthday!
