To elevate higher education to global standards, India must prioritise research funding. Robust financial support from the government, private sector, and industry collaborations is essential to drive groundbreaking research projects. Adequate funds can attract exceptional faculty and encourage young researchers to explore innovative solutions that address global challenges. By investing in cutting-edge research, India can attract foreign students and researchers, cementing its position as a world-class hub for academic exploration. Pramath Raj Sinha of Ashoka University emphasises the need for increased funding and investment in research. He expresses dissatisfaction with the current state of research funding in India, stating that it is inadequate. Consequently, he believes that this disparity in funding is one of the primary reasons why most innovations in science and technology continue to originate from Western nations.
Recognising its importance, the Government of India has introduced the National Education Policy, which includes a crucial provision for establishing the National Research Foundation (NRF). This foundation aims to facilitate a grant system for research and development in higher education institutions.
Student Exchange Programs
Promoting Student Exchange Programs can significantly contribute to internationalising India’s higher education landscape. Encouraging Indian students to study abroad and welcoming foreign students to Indian universities fosters cultural diversity and cross-border collaboration. Exposure to different educational systems and cultures nurtures a global mindset, preparing students to thrive in an interconnected world.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued comprehensive guidelines to maintain academic standards while initiating dual degrees and joint degree programs in association with foreign universities. India has now signed MoUs with around 45 countries to facilitate student exchange programs and opportunities for studying abroad. Under the guidance of its visionary founders, Ashoka University has taken significant strides toward creating a global community. The university has partnerships with several well-known universities across the globe like Amherst College, Boston University, Clark University, Cornell University, London School of Economics and Political Science, and King’s College London, among others, to facilitate intercultural exchange through student exchange programs and collaboration.

Multidisciplinary Courses
Introducing multidisciplinary courses equips students with versatile skills and knowledge essential for thriving in a rapidly evolving global landscape. Integrating various disciplines fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Moreover, it prepares students to address complex real-world challenges, making them highly sought-after candidates in the international job market. India’s NEP 2020 emphasises promoting multidisciplinary education and nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset. Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan spoke about how NEP provides multidisciplinary education and encourages inclusivity. He shared in the North East Education Conclave, “NEP promotes holistic education through multidisciplinary education and giving a new pathway for every local language, proving that enriching diversity and skillset is the unifying factor of our civilisation.”
Similarly, Prof. Manoj Singh Gaur, the Founding Director of IIT Jammu, said, “NEP provides multidisciplinary education suiting 21st century needs. Multidisciplinary courses bridge the gap between theory and practice, preparing students for the dynamic world beyond academia.”
