Celebrating Eid-ul-Adha

The story goes like this. Ibrahim, one of the prophets, saw a dream in which he was sacrificing his own son and thought that the dream was a divine order from God. But God intervened and sent his angel Gabriel to inform him that his Sacrifice had already been accepted. By willing to make this ultimate sacrifice, Ibrahim was able to transcend notions of self and false attachment to the material realm.
The ritualistic sacrifice is an act of thanking God for one’s sustenance and the personal sacrifice of sharing one’s possessions and valuable food with one’s fellow humans. The meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts. One third of the meat is distributed among relatives and friends, another third is given to the poor and needy and the remaining is retained by the family.
