CREDITS:
1. THE STING
When you think you’re following the plot perfectly, and there’s no way the good guys are going to get away with it, you realize you’re being duped too.
2. PLANET OF APES
Iconic trick of place and time ever pulled, this ending perfectly rides the line of unexpected, yet inevitable.
3. MURDER OF THE ORIENT EXPRESS
Initially it seems none of the suspect have anything in common, but at the end you discover one thing connecting them – they all have a motive for murder.
4. FIGHT CLUB
Not a dream, but not real either, this Movie manages to sneak entire imaginary character by us for the entire film. And the reveal? A wonderful hallucinogenic moment of reality crashing down around the narrator.
5. CHARADE
Sometime it’s not unexpected bad guys emerging, rather, the unexpectedly good. It’s not just Audrey Hepburn that suspects Cary Grant of murder, it’s the audience as well.
6. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
The ultimate twist, after 2 whole movies a paternal bomb is dropped. It’s easy to forget how earth shaking it was to discover Luke’s father to be the biggest bad in the galaxy.
7. F FOR FAKE
An hour into Orson Welle’s story, the film changes from documentary to fiction, engaging in a sort of meta-commentary about the act of forgery.
8. THE THIRD MAN
When you spend whole movie thinking somebody is dead only to find out they’re not, the entire plot flips and the victim becomes the perpetrator.
9. THE WIZARD OF OZ
Even though ‘it was all a dream’ is a cliche now, the story of a Kansas girl working out her conflicts symbolically and subconsciously was a fascinating way to learn a lesson about home.
10. PSYCHO
Even after killing of his main character just a third of the way into the film, Hitch manages to save the best reveal for last – that’s actually two reveals in one.
