According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), USD 185 million is required to sustain hospitals and supply medications in Afghanistan.

Ghebreyesus stated on Wednesday that money is required to stop malnutrition, especially in women and children. In Afghanistan, 13 million people don’t have enough food to eat.

About 2.3 million children are thought to be moderately malnourished at the time of the WHO Chief’s call for funding to combat malnutrition.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a post on X,”13 million of people in #Afghanistan — 30 per cent of the total population — face acute food insecurity. Close to 1 million children are severely malnourished and 2.3 million are suffering from moderate acute malnutrition.”

“With immune systems weakened and in the face of a harsh winter, they are at higher risk of dying from infectious diseases. With limited humanitarian aid delivery, these numbers are likely to increase in coming weeks and months. @WHO needs $185 million to continue providing medicines and supporting hospitals to prevent more Afghan children and women dying of malnutrition and the consequences of food insecurity,” he continued.

Afghanistan’s economic status has declined since the Taliban took control of the nation. Under the Taliban regime, Afghans have long lamented the absence of basic utilities, and the nation is now mostly reliant on humanitarian aid.

The EU office in Kabul released a statement stating that the assistance will enhance response and readiness mechanisms for future health and nutrition emergencies as well as disease outbreaks. According to the statement, the EU and WHO’s long-standing collaboration has strengthened and strengthened Afghanistan’s healthcare system.
