Exterior Home Design Trends for 2019

Every year, there are new Trends that emerge in every area: food, technology, television, and especially design. When it comes to design trends specifically, they can have a significant impact on how virtually everything looks. One major area is home design. New design trends can dictate the way a home’s interior and exterior are designed. It can determine if a home will have a modern look, something more classic, or even something in between. Here are just a few of the emerging exterior home design trends for 2019.   More Modified Wood [source] Some of the early homes used simple wood siding on the exterior. While it did its job at creating a safe and secure interior, it was easily damaged by things like mold, rot, and termites. But, the love for the look that wood offers has never gone away, leading to the creation of modified wood. When it comes to exterior home design trends for 2019, modified wood will make more of an appearance on the home exterior. This kind of wood is specially designed to be long-lasting a durable so it will not have the same issues as traditional wood siding in terms of rot, mold growth, and possible termite damage. Beyond, the design options for modified wood are plentiful. There are options for light woods, dark woods, even grays—and they can be used as siding, decking, and even accent walls.   Siding That is Cool, Dark and Neutral [source] For a long time, most homes had light colored sidings: beige, white, and light gray being most common. But, in 2019 that is expected to change with more home designs going with cooler, darker neutrals. Dark grays, navy, and even black siding will begin making more of an appearance on homes. By going with darker colors for a home’s exterior, the level of intensity and drama increases significantly. It creates a more interesting home design that will stand out from other houses on the block with the bold color options. Use Different Types of Siding [source] While the prevailing trend for home siding has been to go with a single, uniform style of siding, it is looking like it will no longer be the case in 2019. Instead, homes are beginning to combine different forms of sidings to create a unique looking exterior that is different from the rest. One popular combination is wood siding and brick. This combines both traditional and modern design and also brings in a more natural touch. Even small touches of a different style of siding can create more interest in a home’s exterior design. Choose Two-Toned Siding [source] Alternatively, one of the other major exterior home design trends for 2019 is to go with two-toned siding. By combining lighter and darker shades of siding, there is an added level of contrast created. This contrast also creates extra dimension, which could make a home seem bigger than it actually is. Two-toned siding can be drastic, with a combination of light and dark. Or, it can remain more subtle, by using the same color siding, with just a few shades difference between the two colors. While this is a simple trend, it can have a considerable impact on the look of a home and make it look much more upscale. Create a Spa-Like Outdoor Space [source] Over the years, there has been an increasing trend of slowing down and relaxing more often. So, it makes sense that one of the emerging exterior home design trends for 2019  is to create a spa-like outdoor space. This is easily done by working with the nature already surrounding a home and even adding to it—a pool, small pond, or trees can all add a sense of serenity to any home’s exterior. When combined with natural wood decking and furniture, it can be easy to create a spa-like outdoor space that nobody will ever want to leave. Continuing Trends [source] While there are plenty of new and emerging trends expected for 2019, there are also the continuing trends. These are the more classic exterior home design trends that never lose popularity. It includes neutral siding colors and simple trimming, with a little bit of contrast. But, by going with classic design trends does not mean one cannot use newer styles of materials, such as modified wood. In fact, by going away from the usual, it can make for a more interesting exterior, even if the colors remain light a neutral. As the current year draws to a close, watch how new homes are built and how old ones are renovated. More than likely, these homes will feature some of these new and emerging trends in 2019. While these are not all of the exterior home design trends for 2019, they are sure to be some of the most popular and common exterior home trends you will see. Of course, those continuing trends will not be far behind, as classic design never goes out of style.
