Kebony completes elegant exterior terrace at 2-6 Cannon Street

Innovative roof Terrace in Central London brings new office building to life Located in the heart of central London, a new build providing 14,416m² of prime office space in one of the Capital’s most sought after locations has been transformed by the installation of a beautifully constructed roof terrace. Kebony was the material chosen to deck the rooftop, which offers stunning views of London’s iconic skyline.  Designed by Tom Stuart-Smith, the terrace maximises the space available, creating a strong and elegant surface. The Outdoor Deck Company was commissioned to supply and install GRAD decking and rail systems to which Kebony wood was fitted to, with tactically placed grip strips added to create a non-slip surface. These innovative methods have created a sleek aesthetic which hides all evidence of fixtures and fittings whilst also maintaining the wood’s enhanced strength and durability.  The installation of the decking was not without challenges, largely due to a number of steel planters located in the middle of the terrace around which The Outdoor Deck Company were tasked with carefully installing the deck. This required precision, meticulous planning and the use of a material which was both strong and easy to work with in tight and curved areas. For this reason, Kebony was selected by landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, and proved instrumental in completing the uniquely shaped rooftop terrace with a contemporary finish. Developed in Norway, Kebony’s revolutionary technology is an environmentally friendly process which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol - an agricultural by-product. By polymerising the wood’s cell wall, the softwoods permanently take on the attributes of tropical hardwood including high durability, hardness and dimensional stability. Kebony is highly resistant to wear and weathering, which made it the ideal material for the office building’s exterior terrace. Although a natural material, the wood requires no maintenance beyond normal cleaning and can stand up to testing conditions far better than untreated softwood.  Mike Wilderink, Managing Director at The Outdoor Deck Company commented: “We are incredibly proud of the rooftop terrace at the Cannon Street office building. The use of innovative technology and materials such as the GRAD decking system and Kebony wood were essential to the success of this beautiful terrace. We have always enjoyed working with Kebony on previous projects and are certainly looking forward to using it again in the near future.” Adrian Pye, International Sales Director at Kebony added: “The Central London rooftop terrace will be perfect for the building’s tenants to enjoy, in both a social and corporate capacity. It’s great to see Kebony being used for such an elegant decking project, which will be enjoyed for many years to come.” Photo: © Matej @pixelpanda / The Outdoor Deck Company
