Introductory Rooms

When you walk into the introductory room at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice you’ll be overwhelmed by lengths of crumpled metal channelling hovering above your head – and all of it is “waste”.

2016 Pritzker prize winning architect, Alejandro Aravena, alongside his team from ELEMENTAL reused over 14 kilometres of scrap metal generated by the dismantling of the previous 2015 Venice Art Biennale. Similarly, the walls are covered by 10,000 sqm of stacked plasterboard dividing each space and showing a snippet of the other exhibitions on display at various venues across Venice.

Utilising waste material from the past Biennale not only calls on the idea of recycling, reusing and upcycling, but also considers the amount of waste material generated by exhibitions once they’ve finished. Aravena hopes to highlight in the exhibition itself the overarching theme for the Biennale: ingenuity and industriousness.

This year’s Biennale, titled Reporting from the Front, sets to encourage architects to address some pressing global issues. Wide ranging interpretation of the theme has resulted in installations and exhibits that deal with economic crisis, housing, waste, migration and robotic construction. With contributions by famous architects such as Tadao Ando, David Chipperfield and Peter Zumthor, the exhibition is not to be missed.

If you make it to Venice be sure to also pop into the Australian Pavilion to experience Aileen Sage Architects and Michelle Tabet’s multi-sensory exhibition, The Pool. Representing the connection between landscape, culture and architecture, the exhibition will thrust you back into nostalgic memories.

The Biennale is on until the 27th November – so you’ve got plenty of time to think up an excuse to find yourself there.
