New E-Design Reveal

 
I'm so excited to share the reveal of a Family Room we've been designing for a client located in Virginia.    Our client filled out our questionnaire form and this gave us the direction of her style  and wishlist.  She also mentioned that she loved the style of two iconic designers:
Kelly Hoppen and Darryl Carter.
Both designers use alot of neutrals and accents of black,  and loads of texture.    The best way to get a feel for the style of Hoppen and Carter's work is not just from their websites, but also google in "images" and you'll see a ton of their designs.  
 
Once we knew our client loved the portfolios of both designers, we were able to tap in to her aesthetic and create her family room.  
We basically had a great base to work with because our client already had some really nice furniture  pieces.    Here's the "before" shot of her room showing the space along with her dark espresso leather sectional, two cream chairs,  antique brass mirrored round side table, and a  creamy white shag rug:
The only items we didn't use were her floor lamp and the 2 mirrors.  Although great pieces, they just didn't fit with the new look we were creating.  Our client was flexible on using them elsewhere in her home.   She also had an iron coffee table/ottoman that she wanted to try and use.   The table is shown below in it's unupholstered state.   She suggested a stone choice for the top because her kitchen countertop fabricator could cut a size of any stone to fit into her table.  She also wanted a fabric option if she chose to go the upholstered route and use as an ottoman.  
 
 
She was wanting a very neutral look with a few natural elements and minimal accent colors.  We wanted the colors of the Family Room to flow with the tiles in her adjoining kitchen, shown here:
 And here's what we did with the look facing into the kitchen:
 
We added just a light touch of aquas in the pillows and also some of the accessories of the fireplace wall.  (for a close up detailed view of all the pillows, see the shopping links below)
 
 Our client  requested possible extra seating in the room, and we were able to accomplish this by rearranging her sectional and adding some fun stools that can rest in front of the fireplace:
 
There's also a seagrass stool positioned just to the right of the sectional in the pic above (2 pics up).   A great way to add more texture into the room.   Our client can use this  stool as an end table for drinks or use for another person needing to pull up a temporary chair:
 
 
  We also put a nice off white  leather  bench with cushions  on the far left wall,  hidden just behind the cream chairs.  Again with just a splash of aqua on a pillow on the bench and the fireplace wall accessories.  We also added a vertical framed guitar print  on the left wall of this elevation with a touch of the aqua blues in the print.
  The artwork above the bench stays simple with a train station graphic print illuminated by a picture light.  The light above the graphic casts some much needed light onto the otherwise dark back left wall.  Notice on the top right of the pic above, there's also halogen puck lighting under the custom shelves that illuminate the accessories.  A small beautiful lamp
rests on the mirrored side table in between the cream upholstered chairs:
 
 
 Our client requested that the Family Room be used primarily  for socializing & relaxation,  and not watching  television.  Her kids use the basement for their play area, so she didn't need the Family Room to function as a play area also. 
 
 Her biggest challenge started on her fireplace wall because she just didn't know what to do with the large walls flanking the fireplace.  Most builders just fill them in with bookshelves and cabinets.  And we did toy with designing around that type of concept too.  But then again, it would just look like every average suburbia house right?  Not that that's bad, but we just wanted to create something special and different.

So, here's what we designed starting with the zinc dressers that flank the Fireplace.
  However, any matching wood cabinets could substitute in other colors such as aged grey, reclaimed woods , black , pale aqua or a swedish grey-blue.

  Even though they're labeled "dressers" they're not necessarily just for the bedroom.  Our client can store board games, placemats, linens, home office supplies, hide Christmas gifts, store children's school art, etc....the possibilities are endless depending on a family's personal needs.

The fireplace elevation had alot going on.  So when it came time to decide on what do you place on the mantel?  Well, the need was apparent.  The items needed to be simple and not fight with all the other elements on the shelves and dressers.  We chose a simple metallic aged silver mirror above a piece of driftwood with succulents:
For a pop of aqua on this side of the room, we chose a standing mosaic platter


Our clients' other challenge was the placement of her existing pieces.
  Drawing upon our Feng Shui beliefs,  we positioned the sectional facing the front doorway, hugging the room, and facing the fireplace.

 And this is the elevation facing the backyard, showing proposed linen curtains with a very cool vintage, reclaimed wood LOVE sign above the curtains:
The linen curtains could be hung higher if need be, but the extra space allows for the fun wood art above the rod. 
You can also see that we placed a console table, hiding, behind the sectional.  On the console, we placed some white books with bookends
 and this gorgey glam lamp
