 We Love This
Dorothy Draper-Inspired Covered Porch
Showing Glamorous, Yet Relaxed Living

A few weeks ago we attended the Opening Gala for the Junior League of Detroit's Designer Showhouse.  The Fisher Mansion is a historic home located on a tree-lined street in the Boston Edison Historic District of Detroit.  The English Tudor style home was built in 1922 by George Mason and owned by the former head of General Motors, Charles Fisher.  The Fisher family commissioned artisans around the world to create their fantasy home.  Today, the home is owned by actor Hill Harper who collaborated with media sponsor for the event, ASPIRE DESIGN and HOME magazine and the host, the Junior League of Detroit to produce this showhouse.  Many of the designers traveled from around the country to show their vision in this historic home proving "great bones" are the best backdrop to profile stellar interior design.

One of my favorite rooms was the colorful, layered covered porch created by Ann Arbor interior designer, Jane Henderson who created a beautiful design in a space with lovely light and an octagonal shaped room with brick-lined walls.  Henderson brought her unique vision to the space and we love the results!  She imagined the Fisher family spending leisurely summers in the home during the "roaring twenties", and pictured the family sipping cocktails while entertaining or lounging in this sophisticated yet casual covered porch.  Henderson tapped into the glamorous style of iconic designer of the same time frame, Dorothy Draper.  Remember Dorothy Draper is best known for her transformation of the infamous Hotel, The Greenbrier when she was hired to renovate the resort after it was used as a hospital in World War II.

Like Draper, Henderson utilized large, leafy and geometric motifs in a vibrant color combination yet she edited the porch well to give it a stunning, classic aesthetic.  The room makes you want to pull up a chair, pour yourself a mint julep at the lovely upholstered bar and bask in the room's glow.  Henderson brought the home's past together with the future in a perfectly balanced way-- congratulations!

Take a look at another space in the house, the dining room we profiled by interior designer Julia Buckingham who utilized two of our root cellar designs' fabrics as the centerpiece for her room's design.
