Light, Bright and Inspiring...A Visit to the Weekend Retreat of Joe Nahem and Jeffrey Field in Amagansett

Last weekend, I paid a visit to the owners of Design Firm Fox-Nahem's Private Retreat on Further Lane in Amagansett in the East End of Long Island. As part of this year's annual East Hampton Historic House Tour, which was sponsored by NYC&G this year, the highlight was a stop into the design and art-filled home of life and work partners Joe Nahem and Jeffrey Fields. The home works well to highlight their fantastic art collection, including a Warhol shining in the entryway. Owners of design firm Fox-Nahem, this power couple are interior designers to some heavy-hitters, including actor Robert Downey Jr., and his producer wife, Susan Downey's East Hampton village home. You may have recently seen their home featured on the cover story of AD magazine (complete with their very own historic, Dutch windmill) this past October. But, back to this stunning house...for starters, the art is drool worthy. Modern and edgy, and mixed with the cool lines of mid-century furnishings, the home is a balanced study of color and textures, and lots of whimsical details. It feels at once Jetson-esque yet modern and fresh with its very own cool west coast vibe. They bought the former home in 1997 on a historic lot (originally a 1960s beach house) and over a six year period they built this home from the ground up. Today, it is a three level home with an open plan, anchored on the ground floor by a floor to ceiling fireplace open to both sides. with over 5,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor living, the designers mix it up nicely from a chunky Moroccan wool rug, to textural vintage reed furniture and unique textiles throughout. While I was visiting their Jack Russell Josie was milling about, and it was noteworthy that even with strangers walking and poking throughout every nook and crannie, the couple could not be more gracious and welcoming.
