Traditionally, firms in the AEC industry employed AutoCAD for their digital requirements. AutoCAD has brought about a great revolution in the Construction industry and was a major disruptive technology of that era. This continued until the advent of BIM which is hailed as the next and much required technological advancement in the industry. Some of the firms were quick to adopt it. However, there are still many firms that are apprehensive about the use and benefits that virtual construction would bring to them. Let’s discuss them and the possible solutions.

1. Why switch to BIM?

This is perhaps the first and most prevalent question that firms face as there is always an apprehension to change. The following points are some of the main reasons for migrating to BIM:

• Increase in efficiencies is during all project stages right from design to construction and maintenance is a major advantage. It is a collaborative platform plus changes or modifications in designs are automated.
• When BIM is adopted by all disciplines in a project, collaboration becomes easier and the documentation is more precise and efficient.
• 2D drawings can be generated directly from the digital models. Hence, the need to re-draw on AutoCAD is eliminated.
• The virtual models can directly be rendered to give a high-quality presentation to the clients. It doesn’t require separate effort as in the case of AutoCAD.

2. When to switch

The next question faced is: What is the appropriate time to make a move to BIM? As BIM comes with a cost of investing in new software plus training and other associated costs, companies are hesitant to make a shift. Studies from companies that have already made the move reveal that these costs are offset by the efficiencies that come in the project because of BIM.

3. Business Consideration

Companies working in markets where BIM is neither prevalent nor mandatory can wait for a few years if they wish or migrate to BIM and gain first mover’s advantage. For other markets, there are several other considerations. Consulting firms will benefit more with early shift to virtual design and construction as they work with different design firms and many of them may have committed to BIM already. In this case, if the organisation is not BIM ready and looses a project because of this, it might be too late to switch.

4. Software Consideration

Software related questions such as cost of the software, availability of trained resources, availability of training centers, etc. play a major role in easy acceptance to change. During the initial days, it was difficult to find trained resources and the cost to train the resource was exceptionally high as there were fewer centers available. Today, you can directly hire trained and experienced resources from the market or institutes.

Working with BIM requires a paradigm shift from the way projects were executed traditionally. With changes in the expectations of the clients and efficiencies achieved by VDC, it can be safely assumed that BIM Outsourcing Services is here to stay for long.
