Vertical cities: A solution to overpopulation

The increase in world population with an estimated growth rate of 9.8 billion by 2050 and 11.8 billion by 2100 is raising concerns on how the increase in population would affect the human resources and their lives. The rise of population would increase the demand for living spaces and the increase of homes and neighborhood often results in destruction.

The rise of human population at an alarming rate has led to limiting of our naturals resources, expanding Cities horizontally for all these new people would destroy more of them. The solution for this dilemma is to build vertical cities.

The idea of vertical cities is to build upwards instead of outwards which will host people in small footprint, while conserving resources and saving the farm fields as there simply won’t be enough land to farm on. These cities are assumed to be as tall as 400 floors, which would contain houses, hospitals, schools, outdoor spaces, basically- ‘everything under a roof.’ As dynamic and appealing as it sounds, the vertical constructions will have their own issues in the design stages. In short, for designing and generating an accurate building model we require modern techniques which include BIM services and CAD services for effective results.

These are built by keeping in mind the importance of ‘sustainability’- the architects will design them in such a way that these cities will be self-sustaining. Vertical towers are considered as a solution for over population and overcrowding. Besides that, these cities will be designed in such a way that they can save as well as generate their own energy.

What are vertical cities?

The vertical planning and development of a city is made in order to accommodate large population on a small piece of land. They will be majorly characterized by high rise building, low ground coverage, higher physical densities like Floor Space Index(FSI) and compact development. It aims to develop a vessel that houses a planned and secure network which is already present in a horizontal city to be hoisted vertically, creating a cognate ambience without compromising the comfort and elegance.

Addressing the urban issues which include population explosion and less land for horizontal expansion is the path chosen for developing this arrangement of interconnected mega-towers.

Concept versus reality

In contrast between what’s possible and what isn’t should be distinguished while we’ve no real cities to base facts on, there is an increased demand on apartments carried within skyscrapers.

Creating and maintaining the vertical development would be costly and time taking. Emotional factors here would play a very major role since lack of sunlight can cause sadness and depression. The major concern here is; how will these cities affect the emotional well-being or moods of the inhabitants? Remaining indoors can have an adverse impact on the humans as well as the animals. But however, open areas in the outer parameters will be the solution to this, which will provide them with fresh air and sunlight.

Design

While these cities will offer us with great possibilities for the future, its necessary to ensure that they are planned and built correctly. These cities need to maintain a uniform distribution of load thoroughly with using materials which perform double duty i.e. gravity and lateral support. Wind engineering has to be worked out in a manner that the vertical constructions does not get affected by heavy wind, the tall towers should be cut in a way that the wind passes through the insides reducing the resistance. Serving can be done with double decks and express lifts, delivery can be done via remote loading and decking with the use of pre-assembled components. The installation of a high-rise tuned mass damper (also known as harmonic absorber) is a quick fix to the problem of vibrations in the upper part of the building from air currents.

In addition to it the newest biotechnology of aeroponics, which is capable in providing cities with food will be introduced. This technology creates an artificial climate for the growth of plants without using soil and substrates.

Future Insight

The answers we need to the hilt for overpopulation, overcrowding and environmental destructions, we first stand in the need of ensuring that it is done properly. Any oversight or miscalculation or even a slightest mistake could be destructive.

We at Tesla Outsourcing Services offer services which in future can help in modeling and building these vertical habitats. Here, we can help the clients with building the models of these cities by providing the best of BIM services. The BIM 6D Services provided by us are modelled by keeping in mind the idea of sustainability with low energy consumption. We ensure to provide services which frames comfort and safety both, as safety is the integral part of every stage of planning and construction.
