I absolutely love Christmas. If you’re reading this post, I’m guessing you do too! Christmas is now just over a week away, but there’s still time to add a few finishing touches to your home. Here are 6 budget-friendly DIY Christmas decoration ideas to sprinkle your home with festive cheer.

Pinecone place settings

These decorations aren’t just pretty, they’re also practical.

What you need: Pine cone, gold spray, luggage tag.

Method:

1. Place newspaper down on a table.
2. Spray your pine cones with the gold spray paint (make sure to open as many windows as possible to protect you from paint fumes).
3. Leave the pine cones to dry
4. Write the names on your luggage tags – you can cut them down a bit if they are too big.
5. Remove the twine from your luggage tag
6. When your pine cones are dry, push the luggage tag through the stalk at the top.

Total cost: £8.50

Christmas tree garland

This garland is simple but effective. The mini evergreens look so cute and are surprisingly easy to make. This Christmas tree garland would look amazing draped across a mantlepiece or hanging over a doorway. (Please hang this item with care as it is flammable!)

What you need: Green A5 paper, jump rings, brown twine, needle.

Method:

1. Take a sheet of A4 paper and fold into a tree. Watch a video of how to make the origami trees here.
2. Push a needle through the top of each tree
3. Using pliers, open one of the jump rings.
4. Place the jump ring through the hole and use the pliers to close it.
5. Feed the twine through the jump ring and tie with a knot.
6. Repeat all above steps for as many trees as you’d like.

Total cost: £8.75

Scandi Star Wall Hanging

These delicate white hanging stars are super easy to make and they look beautiful clustered together. The wall hanging would work great in a window or hanging on the wall over a dining table. It would also be the perfect addition to a child’s bedrrom – as it’s not overly Christmassy you can hang it up all year round.

What you need: White Fimo, Star cutter, branch, brown twine, white string.

Method:

1. Open the Fimo, place it on a smooth, hard surface and use the rolling pin to roll it out.
2. Use the star cutter to cut fifteen stars.
3. Gently lift the stars off the work surface.
4. Use a chopstick to poke a hole through the top point of each star
5. Place the stars on a clean baking sheet, and bake according to package directions. (Allow stars to cool afterwards)
6.  Cut the white thread into various lengths. Pass each piece of thread through the hole in a star, and secure it with a double knot.
7. Attach the stars to the twig or branch, being sure to vary the lengths of thread. Loop each piece of thread around the branch and double knot it to secure it in place.
8. Tie a piece of brown twine around both ends of the branch.

Total cost: £7.40

Minimalist Scandi baubles

These Scandinavian inspired baubles are a fantastic way to connect your home to nature this Christmas.

What you need: Plastic bauble, foliage.

Method:

1. Take your foliage and cut into smaller pieces.
2. Open your bauble and place the foliage inside.
3. Close your bauble and hang the decoration on your tree.

Total cost: £2.00

Star Wall Decoration

These Evergreen stars would be a gorgeous addition to any wall in your home. They are a real statement piece and can be made in a range of sizes depending on how big the lolly sticks are. You could also stand these stars on a shelf to create a beautiful focal point.

What you need: Lolly sticks, Rosemary sprigs, Super glue.

Method:

1. Using template as a guide, create the base form. Cross 2 strips together and glue with super glue. Cross and glue a second pair the same way, then glue the second pair to the first to form a base with 8 spokes.
2. Leave the base to dry.
3. Create the star points: Arrange a pair of strips into a V shape. Glue the star point ends together, then glue the opposite ends to the base tips. Click here for an example.
4. Continue gluing the wooden strip points around the base until you have 8 star points.
5. Cut your Rosemary into pieces the same lengths as the sections of the wooden strips.
6. Superglue the cut greenery to the sticks.

Total cost: £2.00

Paper Diamond Tree Ornament

Craft a tree full of floating diamonds with this beautiful and simple origami project. I’ve used patterned paper for mine, but you can use plain paper if you’d prefer. The best thing about this DIY decoration is you can tailor them to fit with whatever colour palette you are using in your home.

What you need: Origami paper, Scissors, PVA Glue, jump rings, brown twine,needle.

Method:

1. Cut your paper into a 4″x4″ square.
2. Follow the origami instrucions here to create the diamond shape.
3. Using the needle, poke a hole through the top of the ornament.
4. Open a jump ring with pliers and puch it through the hole, close the ring with pliers afterwards.
5. Tie some brown twine through the jump ring.
6. Place the ornament on your tree.

Total cost: £7.00
