Overview

As a collaborator on the ‘BlaZE’ project (Blaenau Gwent Net Zero Energy business parks) by the Welsh Government and Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, carbonTRACK engaged several business parks tenants in the south of Wales with the aim of reducing their carbon footprint and energy costs. One of those tenants was Cotech.

Cotech Filters is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of lighting filters, gels and LED lighting control filters for the film, television and live entertainment industry. Cotech has developed a comprehensive range of products which serves its global customer base from its head office in Wales, UK.

Solutions

Cotech were looking to use renewable energy technologies to reduce their carbon footprint, reduce energy costs, and improve market competitiveness. To support these ambitions, the carbonTRACK Smart Energy Platform was deployed at Cotech’s manufacturing facility.

The multi-tier platform digitally connects energy assets and provides granular, accurate consumption and emissions data as a tier 1 service. The affordable and simple retrofit of the platform-as-a- service model was funded by the Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. The data produced was used by LCT (Low Carbon Technology) suppliers to provide high quality proposals for Solar and Battery Storage systems. The outcomes were analysed by the Swansea University SPECIFIC team whom validated the proposals and guided Cotech through the process.

The new LCT assets will also be digitally integrated to carbonTRACK’s Smart Energy Platform for further optimisation under the tier 2 service. Tier 2 enables Cotech to track and optimise generation, consumption and storage energy flows. Flexible energy assets will be able to be load shifted to optimise tariff charges and participate in demand side flexibility markets under a tier 3 service.

Aims

  • Assist SME Manufacturers in surviving the energy crisis
Provide an affordable and easily retrofittable Smart Energy Platform
  • Collect, analyse and use accurate consumption data to produce high quality net-zero solutions
  • Map energy flows from multiple tenants in the same location to assist in developing new community energy solutions and business models

Impacts

  • Decrease energy costs and carbon footprint for Cotech
Enable a data driven approach to decarbonisation for local authorities
  • Developed a streamlined process for implementing a Smart Energy Platform for SME Manufacturers that can be deployed UK wide
  • Validated a scalable partnership model with Local Authorities and Universities to bring quality solutions that help solve the energy crisis
  • The Government funded tier 1 solution removed a traditional cost barrier for SME’s to start the decarbonisation journey

Results

As a result of this collaboration, Cotech have now installed a solar panel system (109.35kW) and a battery (23kW Solax Triple power storage battery) on one of their units, and they plan to do the same for two more of their units during 2023.

The batteries will have the storage capacity to save peak solar energy generated between 3pm on Fridays and 8:30am on Mondays, and will provide approximately 40% of Cotech’s energy consumption.
