The Bunny Ear Cactus, also known as the Opuntia microdasys, is a popular cactus plant native to Mexico. It is called Bunny Ear Cactus due to the distinctive shape of its flattened pads, which resemble the ears of a rabbit.
If you have purchased a bare-rooted Bunny Ear Cactus, here are some steps to follow to ensure that it thrives in its new environment:
Allow the cactus to rest: When you first receive the cactus, it is essential to let it rest for a few days. This will allow the plant to acclimate to its new environment and recover from any stress it may have experienced during shipping.
Rehydrate the cactus: After a few days, you can rehydrate the cactus by placing it in a shallow dish of water for about 10-15 minutes. Be sure not to soak the cactus for too long, as this can lead to overhydration, which can cause the roots to rot.
Plant the cactus: Once the cactus has been rehydrated, you can plant it in a well-draining cactus potting mix. It's best to use a pot that is slightly larger than the cactus, with a diameter that is around 2 inches wider than the cactus.
Water the cactus: Water the cactus thoroughly but infrequently. It's best to wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which can be fatal for the cactus.
Provide adequate light: Bunny Ear Cactus prefers bright light and can even tolerate direct sunlight. Place the cactus in a sunny window or outdoors in a sunny spot, but be sure to protect it from extreme temperatures.
