Social norms are increasingly popular in development discourse but are relatively unfamiliar to many. Most simply they are social rules of behavior that have consequences if transgressed. Social norms research is being used in low income countries to change traditional harmful practices such as child marriage and female cutting. Understanding and diagnosing norms is critical for planning, monitoring and evaluating interventions meant for social change, especially behavior change.
