Living In Cyprus: Expats and Ex-EU

British Map Flag

As Britain speeds on its inexorable date with destiny and leaves the EU, a lot of expats, like my wife and I, are feeling that we have gone through a divorce we never wanted. Though the new Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, has said that Britain is not abandoning Europe, it somehow feels Europe and Britain are abandoning us.

Maybe that’s a little simplistic and at the end of the day, we’re all right Jack while we are actually still in the EU for at least another two years after Britain triggers Article 50.

But, as we have seen previously in the last month, politics has not followed the normal course of latter years and in fact, anything can happen, and probably will, in the next two years. Who knows, it may not even be two years. Britain may just thumb its nose at the EU tomorrow and it’s bonsoir from her indoors and bonsoir from me.

So when Britain is finally shot of the EU, but still wants to trade with the EU and go on holidays to EU countries, what will the political landscape look like? To be quite honest, your common man or woman in the street probably doesn’t give a toss.

Andy Capp

So long as there is food on the table, fags to be smoked, beer to be drank and something good on the telly, that great British Bulldog, Andy Capp, will be happy and if he’s happy so is his missus and kids and the rest of us can go take a hike for all he cares.

I enjoyed reading the book as I also have a house in Cyprus and have come across some of the same problems as Tom and his wife. Most of what he says I can relate to quite well. He has an entertaining way of describing life in Cyprus for a non Cypriot.
