MANAGING DISAPPOINTMENT: Physical Exercise Might be the Answer

Friday’s this summer have not been the best day of the week for me since Storm Miguel pummelled my petunias in early June.

I packed my little weekender in-Flight bag yesterday with excited anticipation for a family visit to Scotland.  It had been booked for months and when I went to bed last night I could almost taste Glasgow’s finest Italian late lunch that I had been promised after getting off my flight, before we took our ferry trip to Campbeltown.

I slept soundly until about 4.a.m. when I woke up and, for some reason, I looked at my phone.  There was a message from the airline to say my flight to Glasgow had been cancelled, no reason given.

Vacillating between the urge to want to cry and wanting to punch everything within punching distance, I sent a sad early morning text… they’ve cancelled my bloody flight  and went back to sleep around dawn, dreaming about being stranded at an airport.

Thanks to social media, I found out later that, because of Thursday’s thunderstorms, many flights had been disrupted, the knock-on effect drifting into today and, more specifically, MY FLIGHT!

Disappointment comes in various guises.  Bad exam results, the guy you fancy… who doesn’t fancy you and the job you wanted so badly, that you didn’t get.

So how do we cope with disappointment?

Cutting a 20-foot hedge did it for me today… after I had re-booked the flights.  It took about 3 hours to cut and clear up.

So, physical exercise may well be the answer to combatting disappointment… not necessarily with a hedge cutter in your hands.

It’s now Friday evening, and my upper arms hurt like Hell, but I’ve poured myself a glass of Pinot Grigio and I am raising my glass to the family members I should be with tonight, but know I will be with them in the not too distant future… thunderstorms permitting. Ghrrrrr…
