Opening keynote – Computer Algorithms Help Solve Real-World Problems

Coding is an example of how we can use computational thinking skills effectively to write algorithms. Yet we must not limit this to solely computer scientists. Every student should have a basic understanding of how technology works and be given an opportunity to contribute to the algorithms that create the software of tomorrow. As educators, we can create a global culture of innovation by blending technology with our imaginations, to maximize the impact of STEM skills.

Lisa (@LisaAnneFloyd) is passionate about getting kids coding. As an educator and thought-leader in STEAM education, she is able to share her passion for creative coding and digital making. She is completing her graduate degree in mathematics education. Lisa has co-authored articles published in academic journal publications across North America. She is a Computational Thinking in Math and Science Education instructor at Western University’s Faculty of Education, for which she has received an undergraduate teaching award.

Meet Teams

On May 2, Anthony Newbold, principal at Bear Creek Middle School in Fairburn, Georgia joined us to introduce new classroom experiences as part of Microsoft Teams. These new features will make it the digital hub for teachers and students.

On June 27th, as part of Hack the Classroom, you will have a chance to take a deeper dive with us on what these classroom experiences will look like and to ask questions of school leaders and educators who are using these tools today.

Code Builder for Minecraft: Education Edition

Code Builder is a new Minecraft extension that lets players build, move around, and create in Minecraft by writing code. To start Code Builder inside Minecraft: Education Edition, simply type /code. Connect to Tynker, Scratch, MakeCode or add your own coding language.

Learn how students have been using Code Builder and how Minecraft has become an integral part of their learning experience. Be sure to have questions ready for the panel of Minecraft Mentors about how Code Builder, Minecraft, and Microsoft MakeCode can empower your students to build the world of tomorrow.

Cathy Cheo-Isaacs will demonstrate how her elementary students have been using Minecraft and Code Builder and will inspire you to give it a try regardless of the subject or age-range you teach. Our panel of Global Minecraft Mentors and people from the Minecraft and MakeCode team will be on hand to answer your questions as well!

Windows apps that empower students to achieve more

In this segment, we will hear three fast-paced Ignite sessions from teachers on how some of the latest apps are empowering their students to achieve more.

• Paint 3D is a new free tool that is part of the Windows creators update. Research tells us that 3D improves attention span, engagement, motivation and overall academic performance. It also shows that girls enroll at a much higher rate in math and science courses after taking a course in 3D. Hear from Paul Clarke, educator in the UK who is already using Paint 3D with his students and how it is changing the way they think about and interact with learning.
• Rachelle Poth personalizes learning for her students by utilizing some of the latest tech tools. She will share her journey of how Edmodo and Office 365 have empowered her students to achieve more.
• Finally, Kerri Hallihan, a high-school math teacher, has been using eMaths Master to provide math content in small, digestible sizes that can be rearranged by the teacher for a customized learning experience for her students.
