A Tween Bedroom With Style That Endures

I recently had the pleasure of designing a Tween Bedroom for a special young lady. She is an 11-year-old who knows exactly what she likes and her favorite color is purple.

One essential part of the design process was creating a room that was not too babyish, and not too grown up, either. We wanted to create style that would endure well into her college years.

With that in mind, we got to work on her new Tween bedroom. First, we had her create Houzz ideabooks with examples of items she likes. From there, we were able to get a lot of inspiration. We didn’t want to make the bedroom too purple, since it is such a saturated, bold color. So we started with her new duvet cover, which has lots of pretty colors. We drew from there for the color palette. The Euro shams and roll pillow are custom made for her. At the foot of the bed, we chose C.R. Laine ottomans.

The artwork is another custom part of the room, a perfect place to pull the colors of the room together. The purple striped wall is a bold choice for this color-loving young lady. It is a wallpaper by JF Fabrics.

On the nightstands, we made another bold choice: turquoise lamps by Robert Abbey. We all love the unusual shape and bright color. She needs lots of light for studying and having fun, so the ceiling fan could not be the only source of light.

Any tween needs lots of storage, so we built in a wall of white cabinets and drawers. The built-ins include glass-front cabinets and a nook for displaying fun design items.

Finally, one of the most important elements of the room is the desk, where she will study. We chose to place it by the window for natural light, and put an orchid for some extra beauty.

This was a perfect area to give her a chic design element—the Vanguard desk with chrome legs is sleek and stylish. She can bring this with her to college and into her first apartment. It will age with her. For the chair, which is also from Vanguard, we wanted more color, so we chose material from JF Fabrics. The purple, magenta, and tan add another wow factor to the room.

The final result is a fun, festive tween bedroom that functions beautifully. Our young client was thrilled with the result and said she can’t wait to show it off to her friends. That’s high praise, indeed.
