How to start creating a blog in 5 easy steps

A guest post by James Daniels.

People create blogs so they can share their thoughts, experiences and expertise with their Readers. Some even make money out of blogging.

Fortunately the process of creating a blog is not as difficult as it was in the past. A decade ago setting up a blog took a lot of time and angst, not to mention requiring coding to make it work.

Whereas nowadays you can start Creating a blog in only a few minutes. You also have the choice of either paying to have it hosted or to create a free blog. Here are some tips on how to start creating a blog in five easy steps:

1. Who are your readers?

Before you begin creating a blog, you need to define your target audience. Knowing who your readers are is the key to a successful blog. It’s worth taking the time and trouble to find out what they would love to read, as well as buy from you.

There is no need to panic if this seems a bit daunting. Read other blogs and websites for inspiration and clues, especially if you intend to write about the same subject as them. Read their posts to work out what makes them good, or bad. In other words, learn what you can from them.

2. What are you going to write about?

Once you have worked out who your readers are, you need to create some content for them. This will be much easier if you truly understand your readers.  Only then will you know what to write by focusing on a topic you think would be of interest to them.

What you write about needs to be current, relevant and engaging. Start by giving practical advice and tips about your brand, services or products. If you know your stuff, you will not only come across as an authority on the matter, but also earn the trust of your audience.

3. What blogging platform will you use?

Once you are clear on your audience and content, you will need to select a blogging platform. There are many to choose from, such as WordPress, Blogger, Wix and Tumblr.

WordPress is the most popular among them. This is because it is free and very easy to use, which makes it perfect for blogging beginners.

4. What’s your Domain Name?

Having a domain name defines your blog as a business and can affect how you are ranked by the search engines. It is also the first impression your customers will have of your business. So it is worth spending time choosing a brand name that is easy to both remember and type.

5. Which Web Hosting Service will you choose?

You need to have a hosting service to store your content and show how your blog looks to your readers. Even the free blogs have a host, but you will need to comply with their rules and regulations.

However, you can use your own domain name with a paid-for host. This also gives you carte blanche for what you can do with your blog, such as advertising, gathering email addresses and adding payment buttons to your pages.

You are lucky that there are many UK WordPress hosting services to choose from. When you start researching into a suitable host, look for one with a helpful customer service, no hidden fees, and many servers. This enables your blog to be accessible at all times.

Now you can start creating a blog

We have covered the five main points to consider when creating a blog. Start by clearly defining who you want to read it. Then decide on the topic your readers would love to read. Follow this up with choosing a suitable platform, domain name and hosting service, and you’re good to go!
