Arizona’s Gila River Indian Community moves forward with first solar canal project in the US

The Gila River Indian Community in Arizona is launching the Solar Canal Project, the first solar-over-canal project in the US, to address the ongoing drought in the Southwest. The project aims to conserve water and generate renewable energy for tribal irrigation facilities. The first phase involves constructing solar panels over a portion of the community's canal, with the potential to cover over 150 miles of canal with solar panels. The project is expected to save about 200 acre-feet of water per year and produce approximately 1 megawatt of renewable energy.
