For the first time since 1948, North Koreans given a choice in an election

For the first time since North Korea's founding in 1948, residents were given a choice between two candidates in a recent Election. The primary election took place in the city of Hyesan, and two women ran for a seat in the provincial People's Assembly. The use of secret ballots and the possibility of choice generated confusion and interest among voters. However, the provincial People's Assembly is a largely symbolic body that ratifies the policies of the central party. The new voting system is seen as an attempt by Kim Jong Un to show measureable change, but critics view it as a cosmetic change.
