Trial over children’s cough syrup deaths resumes in The Gambia

The trial over children's Cough Syrup Deaths in The Gambia has resumed after being delayed. Last year, 70 children aged 5 and under died from kidney failure after taking over-the-counter medicines. The families of the victims are suing five defendants, including Maiden Pharmaceuticals and the Ministry of Health, demanding they admit that the children were killed by consuming contaminated medicines. The Gambian government has cited E.coli bacteria as a possible cause of the deaths and has ordered a recall of cough and cold medications. The World Health Organization found "unacceptable amounts" of harmful substances in the syrups.
