The Popularity of e-bikes has grown rapidly, with annual sales increasing tenfold between 2017 and 2022. However, this rise in popularity has also led to an increase in rider injuries and incidents, including bikes exploding. The federal Consumer Protection Safety Commission identified a fire hazard in almost half of the e-bike incidents it investigated last year. As a result, there are now calls for e-bike manufacturers to have their products certified for safety. New York City has become the first jurisdiction to require this certification, with the hope that it will lead to safer bikes and fewer accidents.
