Trailblazing ‘Shaft’ star Richard Roundtree, considered first Black action movie hero, has died at 81

Richard Roundtree, the actor who portrayed the iconic private detective John Shaft in the "Shaft" films, has died at the age of 81. His portrayal of Shaft in the blaxploitation genre made a lasting impact, and he reprised the role in sequels and a 2000 revival film. Roundtree's career spanned over 50 years, and he received a lifetime achievement award in 1995.
