Ethiopia: Oromos celebrate their formerly oppressed traditions

Tens of thousands of Oromos gathered at Lake Hora Arsadi in Ethiopia to celebrate Irreecha, an ancestral religious and cultural festival. The Oromo, representing about a third of Ethiopia's population, have long been marginalized and oppressed in the country. The festival serves as a platform for expressing their identity and political demands. The Oromo people give thanks to their ancestral divinity for the end of the rainy season and the arrival of spring. While the festival is primarily a cultural event, political messages demanding the release of imprisoned Oromos and an end to the conflict in the Oromia region were also voiced.
