Spain’s right-wing leader fails in first bid to become prime minister

Spain's right-wing opposition leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, fell short of the absolute majority needed to become prime Minister, receiving 172 votes in favor out of the required 176. His Popular Party failed to secure critical support despite his electoral win and backing from the hard-right party Vox. Feijóo will have another chance on Friday, where a simple majority will be sufficient. If he fails, acting prime minister Pedro Sanchez will have two months to attempt to secure investiture before elections are called in January. Feijóo's struggle for support has been hindered by criticism of Vox's views.
