11 Mexican officers convicted in murders of 17 migrants near U.S. border

Eleven former Mexican police officers have been convicted for the murder of 17 Migrants who were shot and burned near the US border. The killings occurred in January 2021 in Tamaulipas state, near the community of Santa Anita. The victims, 16 from Guatemala and one from Honduras, were found dead in a truck in the municipality of Camargo. The area is a major transit point for drug and human smuggling. The conviction comes as the US government reports that at least 853 migrants died attempting to cross the US-Mexico border unlawfully in the fiscal year 2022, making it the deadliest year on record.
