Scientists uncover 8,000-year-old village underwater, find “treasure trove”

Scientists have discovered an 8,000-year-old underwater village in Lake Ohrid, Albania, making it the oldest lakeside village in Europe. The settlement, believed to have been home to 200-500 people, consisted of houses built on stilts or in areas regularly flooded by rising waters. The village was fortified with thousands of spiked planks used as defensive barricades, and researchers estimate that approximately 100,000 spikes were driven into the lake's bottom. The excavations have revealed valuable insights into the daily life and environmental conditions of the area's inhabitants, but it will take another two decades for the site to be fully explored and studied.
