Ukraine moves Christmas to distance itself from Russian Orthodox Church

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a law moving the official Christmas Day holiday from Jan. 7 to Dec. 25, distancing Ukraine from the Russian Orthodox Church. The law aims to abandon Russian heritage and is a gesture of separation from Russia, its culture, and religious traditions. The Russian Orthodox Church, which claims sovereignty over Orthodoxy in Ukraine, and some other Eastern Orthodox churches, observe Christmas on Jan. 7 based on the ancient Julian calendar. Ukraine's religious landscape is divided, with two branches of Orthodox Christianity, one aligned with the Russian church and the other independent.
