The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, will turn off its lights at night for the entire month of May to aid the safe migration of birds. Over 325 bird species follow the Mississippi River during their annual spring migration, and the lights of the arch can disorientate them. This initiative is a collaboration between Gateway Arch National Park and Lights Out Heartland, an organization dedicated to protecting migrating birds. The lights will be switched back on from June 1, 2023. Other cities and states, such as Toronto, Texas, and Philadelphia, have also taken steps to protect migratory birds.
