$25 Million Donation Launches Largest Coral Restoration Project in Hawaii to Renew 120 Miles of Reef

The largest restoration of coral reefs in Hawaii's history is set to take place, with scientists working to propagate and study corals while cultural organization the Kohala Center works on land to educate how terrestrial activities impact the corals. The restoration project, named ʻĀkoʻakoʻa, is a collaboration between scientists, cultural practitioners, and global information systems experts and has been made possible by a $25m donation from the Dorrance family and Dorrance Family Foundation. The initiative aims to greatly expand restorative work on coral reefs and coastlines of Hawaii and beyond, with a new coral research and propagation facility under construction.
