The red planet isn’t actually very warm! Maybe you’d think that because of its colour Mars must be warm, but really it is quite cold. The planet’s atmosphere is so thin that it doesn’t hold very much heat that it gets from the sun, in summer it can get to 20 degrees Celsius but in winter it can get to -100 degrees Celsius – that’s pretty chilly!

Mars is actually Red because of something other than temperature. The soil, rocks and dust covering the planet are made from Iron Oxide which gives the planet its iconic red colour.

Mars is named after the Roman God of War, but what’s even more interesting is that the two moons that orbit Mars are named after the horses that pulled the God’s chariot – Deimos and Phobos.
