The blue macaw ( Ara ararauna ), also called blue and yellow macaw or Ara ararauna , is a large parrot of the genus Ara easily recognizable by the colors of its plumage.
This bird is protected by the Washington Convention (Appendix II) and the ministerial decree oflisting the protected bird species of Guyana.

Description
It measures about 90 cm long and weighs about 1.3 kg. The top is turquoise Blue and the underside golden yellow. The forehead and crown are blue-green. The undertail is bluish yellow. A black collar is present under the face. The white cheeks are bare but marked however with some streaks of black feathers. The eyes are yellow, the beak and legs black. The female is smaller and paler than the male.
Its area extends from southeastern Panama to the state of São Paulo. It frequents areas of Mauritia flexuosa in particular.

Behavior
This species lives in pairs or in groups which bring together about twenty individuals. The pairs remain formed inside the bands, even in flight.
Reproduction
This bird nests in holes in dry palm trees.
The laying is 2 to 4 eggs. Incubation lasts 28 days. The young leave the nest around 3 months old, but the parents continue to feed the young until they are 6 to 8 months old. Sexual maturity is reached around the age of 8 to 10 years.
Breeding in captivity is possible.
