Exynos Chipset with AMD GPU For Laptops Coming in H2 2021

Until now, we just had Intel, AMD, Qualcomm and Apple in the PC Chipset market, but we have a new player entering the PC market this year, the Exynos. According to a report from The Korea Economic Daily, Samsung is readying a new Exynos chipset that can be used in smartphones and laptops.

The upcoming chip dubbed Exynos 2200 will be featuring a new GPU developed in collaboration with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) is said to offer “improved graphical technology.” The new chipset will be fabricated on Samsung’s 5nm process node.

“The new Exynos will offer improved functions, including extraordinary computing power and battery efficiency, by utilizing a 5-nanometer processing technology. It’s good for both laptops and smartphones,” said an industry insider.

There’s an interesting takeaway; we know that AMD for sure knows how to make processors for PC. Also, during the announcement, AMD and Samsung were not expected to overlap each other offerings. However, after this report, it seems like both the companies found a way around to make it happen.

The Exynos 2200 will be competing against Apple M1 and Snapdragon Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 chipsets which are some of the few ARM-based chips for the laptops. If rumours are to be believed, Qualcomm is said to be working on a third-generation Snapdragon 8cx. At the same time, Apple is due to announce an upgrade to the M1 chip later this year, making the ARM battlefield more interesting than before.

Exynos chips currently power Samsung’s Galaxy series of smartphones and tablets along with select Vivo smartphones.
