Let’s admit it — Swiggy and Zomato you’re savior for our food cravings, aren’t they? It’s a bummer that they’ve run into a riff with Google. The California based tech giant has sent out notices to Swiggy and Zomato for guidelines for in-app promotions.

Swiggy and Zomato Apps Could Be Banned

The popular Food Delivery services have been sent the notice for violating Google’s guidelines by containing in-app promotions for IPL 2020.

IPL has been a majorly hyped event for more than a decade now. In a slow year like 2020, IPL is a bankable promotional opportunity and can be used greatly to increase and hold onto engagement.

Zomato has been using its restaurant discovery service to promote in-app gamification related to IPL 2020. Promotional coupon codes are also under scrutiny for the same. Zomato has confirmed that it will be replacing the conflicting components in their application that will be more engaging and in line with Google’s guidelines.

The food delivery companies claim this move by Google to be unfair, as per sources in ET. “We are a small company and have already realigned our business strategy to comply with Google’s guidelines. We will be replacing Zomato Premier League with a more exciting program by this weekend,” the company’s spokesperson said.

Swiggy has stayed tight lipped about it’s interaction with Google regarding the same. It’s also unclear how Swiggy decides to clear out its conflicts.

This showdown comes days after Google took down Paytm from the Play Store for violating its anti-gambling policies by pushing IPL-based promotion codes.

Swiggy serves 530+ cities and has 2.3lakh+ active delivery partners. Zomato is present in 500+ cities and has more than 250,000 restaurant listings.
