Apple TV+ Greyhound Review: Tom Hanks as a Commander is Astounding

Greyhound premiered on Apple TV+ on 10 July 2020. The American war Film is based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester, starring Tom Hanks, who also wrote the screenplay.

Initially scheduled to release in theatres in June 2020, the release was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and was finally on Apple TV+.
Starring Tom Hanks, Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, Josh Wiggens, Tom Brittany, Elizabeth Shue, the film is directed by Aaron Schneider.

The Battle Of Atlantic

Based on the real events of The Battle Of Atlantic during early 1942. The film portrays the fear of a young soldier and the strength of a commander during the times of distress. There is a sense of urgency in the film. Hanks takes the steering of the film throughout and without fail he represents the pressure on a commander to do well (also, this is his first command) and the feeling of loss after the death of soldiers.

The newness of the commander is shown in very subtle ways: second-guessing his decisions, praying for guidance to god. It might seem a bit boring at first, keeping in view that most of the part of the film is the Navy Fighting. But Hanks, alongside his cast, manages to keep you hooked as the unpredictability of movements remains throughout.

Commander Ernest Krause (Tom Hanks) is the core of the film but in a very minimalistic way. The movie tells the story of a commander and the battle of Atlantic but it won’t make you feel like it’s all about Hanks. One might feel that Hanks as the screenplay writer would have given himself great importance and heavy dialogues but he doesn’t do that.

The U-boats (enemy submarines) are more powerful than Greyhound – It’s swift in movement and very unpredictable. The film has all good features with no character that does not seem to fit.

Stream It or Skip It

STREAM IT! Greyhound features an amazing star cast with a storyline where each present moment fits like pieces in puzzles. In a scene, Commander Ernest Krause wears shoes given to him by his lady love with his blood-soaked feet, while Krause doesn’t show his emotions on the face but in a low-key way, his pain can be seen. It’s painful yet beautiful.

Greyhound is now streaming on Apple TV+.
