The Mandalorian season 2 is Sticking to its October Release Date

The coronavirus Pandemic has delayed almost all major movie and TV show releases all over the world. However, one show that won’t be affected due to the pandemic is The Mandalorian which will release on schedule, according to Disney CEO.

The Mandalorian, much like Black Widow, completed shooting much before the pandemic hit the world and forced people to go into isolation. Thus, when studios were cancelling shows left, right and centre, Mandalorian was in post-production, which is still ongoing. Thus, Bob Chapek said that there won’t be any delay with the series.

“Take for example Mandalorian. Mandalorian was shot before COVID really hit. And so we’ve been in post-production, and there will be no delay with Mandalorian,” Chapek said.

The Mandalorian’s second season received an October release date during a Disney earnings call in February. However, the world has gone through a major change since then.

However, it is not so simple even for those shows who are on post-production. Studios are finding it difficult to work on shows that require extensive effects and audio work in post from home. This is true for Star Trek: Discovery season 3 which is encountering various problems due to remote working.

The Mandalorian is also facing these logistical challenges when it comes to finishing its many effects shots. Animation supervisor Hal Hickel, in an interview with Variety, said that a typical season of The Mandalorian has about 4000 effects shots – which are all being worked on from home.

However, he did add that even though it’s challenging, work will definitely be finished on time.

Although this is a clear win for all the Star Wars fans out there, the same can’t be said for all of Disney’s shows. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision are in a bit of trouble to the filming delays. The Falcon was already reeling under production issues because of on-location filming problems and the pandemic just added to them. While Falcon was stated for an August release and WandaVision for December, it is now unclear whether they will come out this year at all. Moreover, Chapek didn’t clarify either. Other than this, Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy season 2 is also stuck in post-production.

The second season of Mandalorian is extremely hyped among fans. This is partly because Ahsoka Tano and Boba Fett are supposed to join the series. Rosario Dawson and Temuera Morrison are supposed to reprise the roles, respectively.

On the other hand, Disney is apparently working on the third season of the show.

The Mandalorian’s native-run in December 2019 earned the series praise and critical acclaim. The show also became a flagship series of Disney+. Moreover, it also delivered a cultural touchstone in the form of a 50-year-old toddler, Baby Yoda. The impressive finale had set the stage for more adventures to come, which further made fans excited about season 2.

The coronavirus pandemic had, however, initially scared fans into thinking that the new season would be delayed – much like other projects. But Chapek’s assurance has definitely put those rumours to rest.
