Intel to Cut CPU Prices in the 2nd Half of 2020 [Report]

According to Digitimes, Intel is planning to Cut Cpu Prices in the second half of 2020. Looking at present market trends, this would be quite necessary, especially if AMD does launch its Zen 3 based Ryzen 4000 lineup by the end of the year. Let’s dial back and analyze the situation.

Intel Comet Lake-S Comes in Q2-Q3 2020

Intel’s 10th Gen Comet Lake-S launch will be the first major CPU launch of 2020, and along with it, you can expect a good chunk of bizarre claims. Considering that these chips retain the 14nm Skylake core, the IPC will largely be unchanged, however, increased clock speeds should result in improved gaming performance. That’s about it.

The multi-threaded performance won’t change much and compared to AMD’s Ryzen 3000 CPUs, it will most likely perform terribly in non-gaming workloads such as content creation, rendering, video editing and everything in between.

AMD Announces the Zen Based Ryzen 4000 CPUs in Q3-Q4 2020

AMD is most likely going to announce the Ryzen 4000 parts based on the next-gen Zen 3 design in the last quarter of 2020. Leaks should start popping up in Q3 itself.

3rd Gen Ryzen 3000 CPU Prices Drop

Just as it happened with the 2nd Gen Ryzen parts shortly before the Matisse launch, around this time the Ryzen 3000 chips should start getting price cuts. Already quite competitive against the 10th Gen Comet Lake-S lineup, this will put significant pressure on Intel’s desktop lineup.

4th Gen Ryzen CPUs Announced in Q4 2020

The final blow will be the launch of the Ryzen 4000 CPUs. Higher clock speeds coupled with IPC boosts, this should make the Comet Lake parts all but redundant. If their prices hadn’t already dropped, they sure will now.

So, there you have it, folks. That’s how I believe 2020 will play out for the desktop CPU and DIY market. It’s sheer speculation, yes, but a damn good one. Cheers!
