Sundance Film Festival 2020 Is Here! Details Of Every Netflix, Disney+, And Hulu Premieres

On Thursday marks the start of the Sundance Film Festival 2020, one of the world’s largest movie festivals. Since 1981 the Sundance child itself, Robert Redford, founded the festival, thousands of moviemakers, journalists, and film fans go down to Park City, Utah every year to see some of the best movies released in 2020. And Decider will be among them this year.

Sundance Film Festival

Sundance was historically a forum for small films finding distribution, and the festival grew and grew and expanded. Many of the movies that premiered in Sundance now have a home, and many of these homes are streaming services this year. That is, Netflix. This year, Netflix premieres ten Sundance Film Festival films, ranging from star-studded honors to foreign documentaries like Into the Ocean, to Dee Ree’s The Last Thing He Wanted with Anne Hathaway and Ben Affleck. And then there’s the festival’s big opening evening film: Taylor Swift’s Netflix documentary, Miss Americana.

Disney+ and Hulu also have their flags in the Sundance ring in comparison to Netflix. Disney+ is to debut its new child movie Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, and Hulu is to announce all four installments of its new Hillary Rodham Clinton policy, followed by a panel discussion with the former Secretary of State herself.

Sundance is also a place for streamers to purchase new content, so doubt, this list is growing. For instance, Amazon Studios currently does not have any movies premiering at the festival, although the streamer had made hits in previous years, such as The Big Sick at Sundance.

The Sundance Film Festival takes place this year from 23 January to 2 February.

#1. Taylor Swift: Miss Americana

Mega pop star Taylor Swift gets her own Netflix original documentary, and the Sundance Film Festival opens. According to Netflix’s synopsis, the prize-winning producer of Emmy Lana Wilson (After Tiller, The Departure) offers “a raw and emotional look at one of the most influential artist of our era during a transformative time in her life, as she learns to accept her identity not only as a singer and performer but also as a female with full power.”

#2. The Last Thing He Wanted

This political thriller, written and directed by Dee Rees (who has been nominated for an academy award for her 2017 film, Mudbound) and based on the book by Joan Didion, stars Anne Hathaway as a journalist covering the United States of 1984. Willem Dafoe is playing her dad while Ben Affleck is playing U.S. State officials.

#3. Horse Girl

This drama stars Alison Brie as a reclusive, socially uncomfortable “horse girl,” whose weird dreams are driving her crazy. Brie co-wrote the script with director Jeff Baena (Life After Beth), as well as starring.

#4. Sergio

The first narrative film by documentary producer Greg Barker explores the aftermath of the U.S. invasion of Iraq in this biopic about the Brazilian-born diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello (Narcos star Wagner Moura). The movie is also led by Bradley Whitford and Ana de Armas, who received attention for their role in Knives Out as well as a new film by James Bond.

#5. Lost Girls

The film drama by director Liz Garbus is based on Robert Kolker’s acclaimed novel. This tells the true story of Mari Gilbert (Acadamy Award-nominated Amy Ryan), who investigated her daughter’s abduction and brought over a dozen murdered workers to the attention of her.

#6. Crip Camp

The Obamas are following their Oscar-nominated American Factory documentary with another documentary. The latter, which was created by the Obama team through the organization Higher Grounds and led by Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht, himself, to a summer camp for disabled teenagers.

The film by writer/director Maïmouna Doucouré, whose short film, Maman(s), was named the best short film in 2017 in Sundance, Toronto and Césars, is about an 11-year-old girl named Amy. This film is now in her life. Amy lives in a small flat in Paris with her mother and two sisters, and while the family awaits her dad’s return from Senegal, Amy ventures deeply into the Western world of sexuality and girlhood.

#8. Dick Johnson Is Dead

Director Kirsten Johnson is taking this documentary on a quest to keep her 86 year-old father alive, using magic and a good sense of dark humor.

#9. Into the Deep
