‘Little Women’ actress giving support to her director

The leading women of Little Women are giving big-time support for their director. In the track of Saoirse Ronan’s Golden Globe Nomination for directing Greta Gerwig‘s big-screen conversion of Louisa May Alcott’s popular 1868 novel of the same title, the star and costar Florence Pugh have asked Gerwig’s absence from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual crop of all-male Best Director contenders, a move many looked to be a notable snub.

Ronan defiantly held by her director.“She has made one of the best films of the year,” Ronan said.“But it’s important for something like this to occur because it suggests to us how far clearly we still need to go. Greta is a really excellent filmmaker. We wouldn’t be here without her. Our performances rely so much on one another, but Greta is the one who made us all together, and she’s the leader of the whole thing.”

Ronan also championed Gerwig in her prompt reaction to alighting a Golden Globe nomination for “Little Women.” The actress stated in a statement, “I am continually thankful to Greta Gerwig for her leadership and partnership, and for her intense determination that made this improbable cast mutually and created a situation for us to display a real family and tell this very special story. My performance in this movie refers to Greta as much as it does myself and I share this honor fully with her.”

At the 2018 Golden Globes, Gerwig lost to land a directing nomination for “Lady Bird.” Gerwig’s snub was especially glaring regarding the movie also arrived nominations for Best Actress (Ronan), Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), and Best Screenplay (Gerwig). Both the movie and Ronan won Golden Globes.
