Alert! Black Plastics Will Be Banned To Use In Supermakets By Christmas

According to a new report, Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Asda will stop using black Plastic in their products by the end of the year.

A source Stated that the four supermarkets will follow the steps of Morrison’s which announced last week a ban on the hard to recycle materials.

Aldi and Iceland are also planning to drop black plastic from their own-label drink and food ranges by the end of 2020.

Currently, tens of thousands of tonnes of black plastic every year end up in landfills or being burned as it contains a carbon pigment that cannot be identified by recycling machines.

Tesco stated that they will remove all black plastic by the end of December this year and is now ‘discussing with branded suppliers to do the same.’

Asda also newly stated that it had removed 45 million ready meal trays that contained black plastic from its range which it said alone removed ‘775 tonnes of earlier unrecyclable plastic.’ It plans to remove all the black plastic by the end of 2019.

Sainsbury’s was another supermarket to fully ban the black plastics by the end of December this year– by which 6,000 tonnes of plastic will have switched to recyclable alternatives.

Waitrose stated that it had removed approximately 90% of the 2,291 tonnes of black plastic it uses as of the by end of October and was ‘well on track’ to get cleared of it fully by the end of December this year.

The Co-op said the same thing intending the material will have been separated from over 300 lines.

Stuart Lendrum, Iceland head of recycling stated that he expected his supermarket to have eliminated black plastic by the end of January 2020.

He stated that ‘We have been performing good improvement with eliminating black plastic across the board.’

Sources said that Marks & Spencer is further behind but said it was on course to remove black plastics before the end of next year.

Aldi also has a target to remove black plastics by the end of 2020.
