The Message
The 3 minutes long track talks about life, youth and time. Chan expresses his concerns about life and how he and his friends spend their time doing what feels good at that moment.
He doubts if these actions they take are the best. In the song, he wonders whether he would change some decisions he’d made if he had the chance to go back in time.
In the first verse he sang:
“But what I know is that we never save time… we waste it on anything to feel less alone.“
An interesting fact about this lyric is that we can all relate to it. Sometimes we involve ourselves in activities different from what we really should be doing just so we don’t feel lonely.
This could simply be; partying instead of studying, or hanging out with family instead of preparing for a presentation.
Afterward, Chan proceeds to talk about how, in the process of keeping himself occupied, he and his friends get lost on the way.
He talks about being unsure of the substance he is on, such as alcohol or drugs, and feeling unsure of his safety in those moments.
“I’m not sure what I’m on, if I’m safe ” he sang.
One of the most captivating messages is in the bridge where he talks about the dreams/goals he and his friends have. They seem to keep aiming for these dreams but never get close enough. Then they get high and end up spending their nights on the ground. Holding on to an illusion of money, they already spent at a store.
“And those highs that we knew all before… We on a bag then we left it at a store,” Chan sang.
Asides the lyrical content and message of this song, “Say” has a very catchy, trendy beat. As an R&B or Hip-Hop lover, you are sure to love this song in the first 10 seconds. And as a person who is open to all kinds of music, “Say” will grow on you in no time.
