Avengers: Endgame Returning To Theatres With Additional Footage

Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, has revealed that Avengers: Endgame will return to theatres with new post-credit scenes.

This unusual decision likely comes as a result of the desire to topple James Cameron’s Avatar as the highest grossing movie worldwide. Avengers debuted back in April with $1.2 billion worldwide, and currently holds the title of the second highest-grossing movie globally and domestically with $2.743 billion earned. Not accounting for inflation, it’s about $40 million off of completely dethroning Avatar. Even though many other films this spring have been reviewing and performing poorly, they still pulled enough repeat viewings away from Endgame to thwart its record-setting efforts, so this rerelease seeks to fix that.

In an interview with Screen Rant during the Spider-Man: Far From Home junket, Feige confirmed Endgame will be re-released on June 28th. While it isn’t an extended cut of the already 3-hour film, it will have something new after the credits instead of a mere clanging noise.

Feige described it as “(…)Not an extended cut, but there will be a version going into theatres with a bit of a marketing push with a few new things at the end of the movie. If you stay and watch the movie, after the credits, there’ll be a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises. Which will be next weekend.”

The rerelease will be competing with the potent Toy Story 4 and, in a few weeks, its contemporary and pseudo-sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home, so the record is still not a guarantee. Still, seeing some of the Blu-ray’s bonus features early will be nice, as well as a possible tribute to the deceased Stan Lee. We’ll see how Avengers: Endgame fares when it rereleases in theatres late next week.
