Chances are you’ve probably never heard anything about the not so quaint little island of Ios, let alone their massive Swedish Midsummer celebration.

So before I begin on telling you why Swedish Midsummer is one of my favorite holidays in the world (second to only that of Halloween), first let me formerly introduce you to the setting of all the festivities, the island of Ios.

To put it blunt, during the summer months, Ios is transformed into the equivalent of an international college frat house found on a beautiful Greek island, minus all the homework and roofies.

Between the months of June and August, the island is completely taken over by 20 something year old travelers from all around the world looking to experience the wildest holiday of their lives.

Although some may see Ios as just another party destination like Ayia Napa or Mykonos that comprises of several months of loose morals and bad decisions, Ios is so much more than that.

Ios is a place that truly captured my heart from the moment I arrived, enough so that I would eventually end up returning three summers in a row.  The island is founded on nothing but good times, making new friends and creating lifelong memories.

Often compared to Neverland from the story of “Peter Pan” Ios embodies the same significance for many of those who have visited and find the downside to this island is when it comes it is time to say farewell.

Throughout the summer months, the island is known for celebrating several international holidays, but none more exciting than that

What is Swedish Midsummer?

Aside from Christmas, Swedish Midsummer is the most celebrated holiday in the land of Sweden.  The traditional Swedish Midsummer is spent ingesting a never-ending lunch, dancing around poles and spending time with family and friends in song and laughter.

However, much like any holiday such as Christmas, Thanksgiving or Halloween, there needs to be an alcohol fueled, wild party alternative.  For Christmas, there’s Santa-Con, for Thanksgiving there’s Thanksgiving Eve, for Halloween, there’s Halloweekend and for Swedish Midsummer, there’s Ios.

Well somehow Ios has turned into the international hotspot for any and everyone looking to celebrate Swedish Midsummer with a bang… even if you’ve never once heard of the holiday before in your life.

Pro Tip

If you’re looking to experience a traditional Swedish Midsummer, then DO NOT come to Ios.

When Is Swedish Midsummer?

Swedish Midsummer in Sweden is during a weekend between June 20 and 26 however Swedish Midsummer Ios Greece is celebrated on the eve of the traditional holiday date.

For 2018 Swedish Midsummer falls on June 23^rd, therefore the holiday is celebrated in Greece on June 22^nd.

Swedish Midsummer Ios Greece

Unlike most days in Ios, the hungover crowd of nightwalkers manages to uncharacteristically stumble out of bed before 12pm to partake in the highly anticipated event of Swedish Midsummer.

The party literally begins at 9 in the morning as hordes of anxious partygoers storm the narrow alleyways of Ios Chora for some proper predrinks, holiday festivities, and recklessly awesome party antics.

A majority of bars are open early in honor of Swedish Midsummer, and it is the perfect way to begin the celebration.

However, just because it’s still the morning time, don’t expect a chilled out party atmosphere.  Things quickly jump from 0 to 100 with no signs of turning down anytime soon.

Be prepared for some reckless drinking games, crowd surfing, nonstop dancing and chanting as this festival only begins to get started.

Don’t fret as the streets and bars of Chora rapidly turn into a mob scene with little room to move, the party quickly and unsafely carries over to the rooftops of the town before being hastily ushered out down towards the beach.

Proceeding from the town sometime in the early afternoon, begins an epic parade bursting with blue and yellow in honor of the Swedish national colors, headed straight to Far Out Beach Club for one of the most legendary pool parties of the summer!

The pool party at Far Out Beach Club continues long into the evening with more and more people joining in on the fun as the day goes on.

If you’re still up to it, most of the bars and clubs will be open in town that night, however don’t expect the usual crowd.

Most of your fellow partygoers will have long passed out for the night after literally partying all day, however it’s Ios… so no matter where you go you can always find a good party.

The atmosphere of Swedish Midsummer Ios Greee is truly unforgettable spent poolside, painted from head to toe in blue and yellow, partying to your hearts content with some of the wildest people from Sweden, and with even more who wish they were.

Where To Stay In Ios

The two best locations to stay on the island are either by Mylopotas Beach or near the main town.

I personally prefer staying near the town to avoid the drunken stumble back down the mountain to the beach accommodation after a night spent partying at the bars.

Even though there is a night bus that runs all hours, I still prefer to avoid the hassle.

On the other hand, if you prefer to be beachside, Far Out Beach Club Camping offers some affordable accommodation options.
