This Early Star Wars Design for Kylo Ren Will Give You Nightmares

Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren may not look like your typical Star Wars villain, but his journey from Ben Solo to a tortured servant of the dark side is a rich and credible one – even when you see him shirtless.

While there’s no doubt that Kylo’s costume makes him formidable when he’s in full Supreme Leader of the First Order mode, the vulnerability of the unmasked Kylo helps humanise the character.

And, let’s face it, we all love a complicated villain.

However, Kylo Ren was originally a lot less ambiguous, as recently revealed in Christian Alzmann’s terrifying concept art from The Force Awakens.

Drawing from Kylo’s grandfather and idol Darth Vader, Alzmann’s initial concept artwork shows Adam Driver’s character as a straight-up baddie. Grey skin and all.

Sharing his work with fans on Instagram, Alzmann wrote: “Very early Jedi Killer/Kylo concept. Wasn’t used in Star Wars: The Force Awakens but ended up being the inspiration for the Fifth Brother in Star Wars Rebels.

Well that’s us sleeping with the lights on later.

Meanwhile, Adam Driver recently hinted that all of those Kylo/Ben complexities will be revealed when Episode IX is released later this year.

Opening up about the process of filming The Rise of Skywalker, Driver said: “With Star Wars, I had one piece of information of where it was all going, and that’s where it has been in my head for a long time, and things were building towards that.

“It feels very theatrical, if anything.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released on Thursday, December 19 in the UK and Friday, December 20 in the US.
