‘Slave Leia’ Goes to the Beach – Carrie Fisher in Bikini Promoting Return of the Jedi – 1983

These 14 rare vintage photos of Carrie Fisher in Slave Leia bikini at the beach promoting 1983’s Return of the Jedi are a must-see.

For a little background, 1983’s Return of the Jedi has a storyline where Princess Leia, played by then-27-year-old Carrie Fisher, is taken prisoner by Jabba the Hutt. To spice things up a bit, Hutt makes Leia his slave and forces her to wear a skimpy gold bikini.

Rolling Stone ran an article on Carrie Fisher and the movie and, of course, decided a beach was the perfect place to photograph the cast and Fisher’s amazing swimwear. The photoshoot took place at California’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area and featured Fisher as Slave Leia, Darth Vader, an Ewok and a Gamorrean Guard – all having normal Earth type fun at the beach.

It was reported that the bikini was too small for Fisher and that her breasts had to be taped into place to prevent them from being exposed during filming of the movie.

Thirty two years later, in 2015, Fisher returned to the Star Wars’ film series as General Leia Organa in The Force Awakens. During interviews prior to the film’s release, Fisher was asked if she still had the bikini, to which she replied “I wear it on special occasions. I’ve got it on underneath now. I wear it always, for luck.”

The Wall Street Journal asked Fisher her opinion on rumors that Disney (whom purchased the rights to the Star Wars saga from George Lucas) would no longer market or sell Slave Leia merchandise. And Carrie had a very entertaining answer to the question… “I think its stupid,” she replied. “The father who flipped out about it, ‘What am I going to tell my kid about why shes in that outfit?’ Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didnt like it. And then I took it off. Backstage.”

Even those people who aren’t necessarily Star Wars fans are likely aware of the metal “Slave Leia” bikini that Carrie Fisher wore in Return Of The Jedi, as it has been featured in countless parodies and is a hugely popular cosplay outfit and Halloween costume.
