Gout Triggers (Avoid!)

Gout is a kind of arthritis that leads to severe pain in the joints, most frequently in a big toe. Hyperuricemia is a condition in which the Uric Acid is in higher amounts in the body and causes Gout. This is because whenever uric acid levels are higher in the blood, they will trigger gout.

Foods That Can Trigger a Gout Attack

Purines

Purines are natural substances. They are present in some foods such as vegetables, meats, and legumes, etc. These purines are broken down by the body into uric acid. Hence, people, who consume purines rich food are more inclined to Gout Attacks. Studies have shown that not all purines are dangerous for gout. Foods abundant in animal purines are more likely to cause gout attacks than food rich in plant purines. Very high purine foods are salmon, trout, shellfish, sardines, anchovies, and mussels. So to avoid gout triggers, one should only consume these foods occasionally. Pork, turkey, bacon, mutton, and veal are also high in purines.

Certain Carbohydrates

Not all carbohydrates are dangerous for gout sufferers. Some of them are helpful, while others can provoke gout attacks. Consuming too many refined carbohydrates leads to a rise in blood sugar levels and ultimately can increase the amount of uric acid in the blood. There’s a need to maintain a balance while consuming carbohydrates because things in excess can be harmful to health. The worst offenders include sweets, pastries, and sugary beverages (discussed below).

Sugary Beverages

Sugary beverages are highly problematic in gout. A gout patient should avoid sugary drinks because these drinks can flood the body with sugars and leads to a higher amount of uric acid. Such beverages include soda, sugary-flavored juices, orange juice, and energy drinks.

Alcohol

Alcohol consumption is highly detrimental for gout patients. It’s because when a gout sufferer consumes alcohol, the kidneys strive to get rid of the alcohol rather than uric acid. Uric acid may therefore build up in the body and trigger gout.

Medications That Can Trigger Gout

Some medications are essential to treat gout, but others can actually trigger gout attacks.

Studies show that acetylsalicylic acid or aspirin elevates uric acid in the blood. It shows that aspirin can cause gout attacks. Water pills or diuretics assist in treating conditions such as edema or swelling in the legs, or high blood pressure. Usually, they work by relieving the excess amount of water and salt from the body. But diuretic drugs are also gout triggers such as chlorothiazide, hydrochlorothiazide, indapamide, metolazone and spironolactone.

Other medications that can trigger gout are ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, angiotensin II receptor blockers, cyclosporine, and chemotherapy drugs.

2022 Update: A Natural Effective Solution to Stop Gout in 15 Mins?

As mentioned above, some medications can stop and prevent gout attacks. However, it turns out there is a better way and devoid of side effects.

It doesn’t have to do with avoiding meat, but rather, it involves inducing key changes to your gut microbiota which in turn enables them to become much more effective at breaking down purines. This means no uric acid crystal formation.
